The best quotes on fishing? Try the inspiring gems of Henry Miller
I will go fishing, or maybe crab fishing, depending on the water and the weather.
So I decided to haul the recycle bin to the sidewalk, so to speak, and compile a collection of outdoor-related pearls of wisdom that have appeared at the bottom of the columns since I started adding them at the start of the pandemic lockdown in April 2020.
“Pearls” in this case means applying the rule of rubbing them on your teeth to see if they are real or fake.
Rough and gritty, it’s real. Smooth is wrong.
On the theme of fishing …
“Experienced and successful anglers always say that small fish taste better,” says anyone who never catches big fish, including me.
“Anyone who has ever used the phrase ‘the camera adds 10 pounds’ hasn’t seen any of my pictures of fish.”
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you provide him with a life of ruinous expense and futility. “
“Fishing is a jerk at one end of a line while waiting for a jerk at the other end.”
It is also a quote borrowed from my ex-wife.
“I only fish catch and release” is the best line ever designed to not catch fish.
“Politicians and lawyers who are not anglers seem to me to be a tragic waste of experienced and highly skilled liars. “
“An optimist is an angler who can sit on a rock in a sleet storm without a bite for three hours and say how great it is that there are no mosquitoes. “
“I think my best as I wait for a fish to bite. I have thought a lot in my life.
“It’s funny how a fisherman can forget his license, his rods or his fishing box. But I’ve never met one who forgot to bring the cooler.
“One of the best lessons that fishing teaches is that if you’re tempted to fall for something, it’s best to keep your mouth shut.”
From the late great friend and outdoors writer John Higley’s book of quotes: “I don’t know if I like fishing or if I just like being in places where you find fish.”
On the theme of camp cooking …
“One of life’s unsolvable mysteries: how do you know when sauerkraut is bad? “
“You know that dirty, watery thing that always comes out of squeezable condiment bottles?” What’s worse: ketchup water or mustard water? To discuss.”
I asked an elder from the Nestucca River if he had fished there his whole life. He replied, “Not yet. “
And finally …
“You are never lost if you don’t care where you end up.”
Coho fishing on Williamette, North Santiam
On September 26, a “silver” coho salmon crossed the Oregon City Falls fish ladder on the Willamette River on September 26 during their spawning run up the river.
And the total number of adult coho above the falls was 4,318 through September 28.
Fishing is open on the Willamette Falls to the Highway 20 bridge in Albany for coho.
For fishing rules on the Santiam Nord and Sud rivers, see pages 47 and 48 of the “2021 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations” for specific dates and areas open for money.
Printed copies of the recording books are available free of charge from licensing agents or online at eregulations.com.
To note: For those fishing in northern Santiam, access to Fishermen’s Bend, Niagara and Minto County Parks remains closed due to damage from wildfires.
But Packsaddle Park recently opened, and the North Santiam of the Stayton-Scio Bridge at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in the park opens Oct. 15 for the silver medals.
Note 2: Further down the Willamette, coho fishing resumes on the Clackamas River, which flows into the Willamette at Clackamette Park in Oregon City.
For a map and directions to the park online, go to The Oregon City page for Clackamette Park on orcity.org.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: Going fishing is like eating garlic. If everyone does, no one will notice the smell.
