International Dance Day 2021: date, theme and inspirational quotes

International Dance Day is celebrated on April 29 each year across the world. But this time, in this current pandemic scenario, the dancers are celebrating online to show off their talent. The word “dance” brings happiness to people’s lives. For non-dancers, it is the expression of their concerns and for dancers a mantra of their talent. This day is an opportunity for those who want to pursue their career in dance.

This day was initially initiated by the Dance Committee of the International Theater Institute (ITI) which is the main partner of the performing arts branch of UNESCO. The date is chosen to honor the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, known as the creator of modern ballet.

International Dance Day 2021: Theme

Previously, this day was celebrated by selecting an exceptional choreographer to spread the message around the world. This choreographer was chosen through a combined selection process by the Dance Committee and the ITI Executive Council. However, this year due to the pandemic, the day will be celebrated on virtual platforms.

Dance is treated as a medicine to treat physical, psychological and cognitive-behavioral problems. It also helps fight anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. In India where we naturally immerse ourselves in the different forms of dance in our one-year traditions.

India is a country with eight forms of classical dance and many varieties of folk dances and tribal arts. We cannot completely deny the dominance of western dance forms, but India itself is famous all over the world. We witnessed a fascinating fusion of many folk and classical dances with elements of jazz, hip-hop, aerobics and Latin.

It is a known fact that the old Bollywood classics were based on classical and folk dances from various parts of India like Kathak, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam and Bhangra to name a few. In the 1950s and 1960s Kathak and Bharatnatyam were the souls of dance, and great dancers like Geetanjali, Sandhya, Vyjayanthimala, Padmini, Ragini and Mahipal took dancing to another level. The day aims to bring people together around a common language: dance.
